Computer hardware refers to the actual physical components of a computer system. Computer software, on the other hand, is the digitally encoded instructions that tell the hardware what to do. The broad categories of "hardware" and "software" can be further subdivided into distinct types. Knowing the differences will help you understand your computer better. System Software

  • System software, often called the operating system, is the master controlling program that directs the work of all other software programs and hardware devices in a computer system. A software subsystem called the application programming interface provides communication between application software and the operating system. A set of individual programs called device drivers is usually included within the operating system software to allow the operating system to work with most standard, generic hardware.

Application Software

  • Individual programs written to perform specific tasks, such as word processors for creating and editing documents, spreadsheets for analyzing numeric data, and web browsers for accessing the Internet, are called application software.



Data

  • Data is very much like application software, except that it is the information used by an application rather than the actual instructions that run the application. For example, a spreadsheet program is an application. The information you enter into a spreadsheet is data.

System Hardware

  • System hardware includes all the physical, mechanical components of your computer, including circuit boards, power supplies, and cooling fans.

Storage Devices

  • A storage device is a hardware component where system software, application software, and/or data are written and stored in digital form. These devices include hard disk drives, flash drives and writable CDs.

Peripherals

  • "Peripherals" specifically refers to a hardware device that is attached to your computer with a cable or wireless connection. A peripheral is usually a device for inputting or displaying data, such as a video monitor, keyboard, mouse or printer. Most peripheral hardware comes with its own specially written device driver software, which must be installed on your computer before the operating system can work with the new device

Bill Gates (1)

William Henry Gates, also known as «Bill», has established himself as the richest man in the world.

He is the youngest self made billionaire, and perhaps the best businessman in the world. Bill Gates is important because he did not only change the computer technology in America, but also created the biggest, strongest, richest and the most powerful company in the world.

Bill was born on October 28, 1955, his parents, Mary and Bill, had one other daughter Kristi.

Gates began his career in PC software, programming computers at age 13.

As to his education, he attended a well-known private school in Seattle, Washington called Lakeside. At Lakeside, he met his future business partner Paul Allen. Bill Gates entered Harvard in 1973.

He created the programming language BASIC. Gates attended Harvard University and after a few years Gates and his business collaborator, Paul Allen, dropped ou t of Harvard to begin the Microsoft Corporation in 1975.

Throughout his life, Gates had many experiences with business. Allen and Gates started a small company called Traf-O-Data. They sold a small computer outfitted with their program that could count traffic for the city.

Gates also worked at a programming company called 'TRW. After all his minor jobs, Gates and Allen founded Microsoft in 1975, the largest computer  based company in the world. Gates is the Chief Executive officer and Paul Allen is VP. They are both very wealthy due to this business.

Gates believes that if you are intelligent and know how to apply your intelligence you can accomplish anything.

Bill works very hard to carry out his vision. His belief in high intelligence and hard work is what put him where he is today, as well as being in the right place at the right time. He doesn't believe in luck or any sort of god, just hard work and competitiveness.

«Trey» as he is called at home is a remarkable man who has been able to go into the world spotlight as a genius at what he does. His welfare until today is worth about 92,000,000,000 dollars.

At present mobile phones have become ingrained in our everyday lives and the majority of people can hardly imagine themselves without cell phones. Is it just a tribute to fashion or a necessity of a modern person?

It isn’t a secret that today many people feel quite helpless if they have left their mobile phones at home. First of all cell phones give us an opportunity to keep in touch with people in any place and in any time (it’s especially important for businesspeople). Besides, modern mobile phones are multi-function: they provide access to the Internet, have various games, cameras, memory sticks, et

Nevertheless we can’t deny that mobile phones provoke a range of problems. People have started to see each other less frequently. Mobile communication requires quite a lot of money and people have to control the amount of money on their accounts constantly otherwise at the most inappropriate moment they won’t be able to phone the people they need. But the greatest disadvantage of cell phones is certainly their harmful influence on people’s health.

In my opinion at the present time mobile phones are an integral part of life of any person and we can’t stop it. I personally need it everyday for my work and to keep in touch with my friends and relatives, though I’m aware of its deleterious influence on my health. But I try to avoid idle talks on the phone to reduce the influence of harmful radio waves. I try to find the happy mean.

В настоящее время мобильные телефоны укоренились в нашей повседневной жизни, и большинство людей вряд ли может представить себя без мобильных телефонов. Что же это: просто дань моде или необходимость современного человека?

Не секрет, что сегодня многие люди чувствуют себя беспомощными, если они оставляют свои мобильные телефоны дома. В первую очередь мобильный телефон дает нам возможность поддерживать связь с людьми в любом месте и в любое время (это особенно важно для деловых людей). Кроме того, современные мобильные телефоны многофункциональные: они обеспечивают доступ к Интернету, имеют различные игры, фотоаппараты, карты памяти и т.д.

Тем не менее, мы не можем отрицать, что мобильные телефоны вызывают ряд проблем. Люди начали видеть друг друга не так часто. Мобильная связь требует довольно много денег, и люди должны контролировать количество денег на их счетах постоянно, иначе в самый неподходящий момент они не смогут позвонить людям, в которых они нуждаются. Но самый большой недостаток мобильных телефонов, конечно, их вредное воздействия на здоровье людей.

На мой взгляд, в настоящее время мобильные телефоны являются неотъемлемой частью жизни любого человека, и мы не можем ее остановить. Мне лично телефон нужен каждый день на моей работе и чтобы поддерживать связь с друзьями и родственниками, хотя я знаю о его вредном влиянии на мое здоровье. Но я стараюсь избегать пустой болтовни по телефону, чтобы уменьшить влияние вредных радиоволн. Я пытаюсь найти золотую середину.

Yesterday I got a subscribe massage by e-mail and came across a very interesting problem: Is the Internet useful or harmful invention? Are you ready to help me? The topic of our discussion is: Television and Internet.

Try to define the problem of our lesson.

At the previous lesson you were divided into 2 groups to prepare the poll. To prove that television has a lot of advantages and disadvantages you had to interview your schoolmates and sum up this information. I’m so curious about the results. Now you are given 3 minutes to discuss your results and one person of you will inform us about them. Will you write down the key words of advantages and disadvantages on the sheets of paper with a marker and place them on the board.

According to your research into the problem television has both advantages and disadvantages. Let’s repeat them. This group (who studied disadvantages) will repeat advantages one by one; the other group will repeat disadvantages.



Students discuss their results in groups and perform them with help of diagrams (prepared in advance) and key-words.

Advertisement for the Internet promises you a world of information, entertainment, on-line shopping and e-mail services. But the real world of the Internet may not be as perfect as the advertisements suggest.

Using the Internet offers man advantages. Firstly, all of the latest information is available to you at any hour of the day or night. It is much faster and easier to surf the net in search of information from all over the world than to travel to libraries on dozen of countries. What is more, on-line shopping makes it possible to search through catalogues to find exactly what you want at the best price, saving both time and money. By joining a newsgroup or a chat group, you share your hobbies and special interests, and perhaps make friends all over the world. Also, e-mail is popular because it is faster than sending a letter and cheaper that a telephone conversation. On the other hand, the Internet has several disadvantages. For example, with so much information available, finding what you can take you hours. Multimedia web pages with photographs music and video make downloading slow and boring. Moreover, there is too much advertising instead of real information. As for Internet friendships, sitting at home in front of your computer making ‘chat friends’ is not the same as actually meeting people. In conclusion, the Internet obviously has both good and bad points. Fortunately, the system is improving all the time, and any problems which still exist can be solved. Whether we like it or not, the Internet is here to stay, so we have to make the best possible use of it.

Now we are going to watch this episode again, but you will have another task. The first group has to choose and write down the key words of advantages of the Internet, and the second – of disadvantages.

Then place them on the board and perform, using the key-words.

You may think of your own advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet.

What is it “mass media”, tell me please?

Today we are going to speak about some means of communicating. They are traditionally called the media.  The mass media actually rule the world and play a very important part in our lives.

And now tell me what types of mass-media do you know? Which sources of information mass media includes?

P:  I know TV, the Internet, newspapers, magazines and radio.

T: What types of mass-media do you use in your everyday life?

P: In my everyday life I usually use TV, the Internet, radio and newspapers.

T: So students, I see you know the main media. But what are their definitions?

Your task is to match the words and their definitions.

  The mass media play an important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities foe education and entertainment. They also shape our views and influence the way we see the world. There are a lot of different TV programs and newspapers : a quiz show, a review, a commentary, an entertainment program on TV and a quality newspaper (a broadsheet), a tabloid, a local paper etc.
Of course, not all TV programs and newspapers report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV reporters try to be fair and prove us with reliable information.
It is true that the world today is full of dramatic events and most news seems to be bad news. But people aren’t interested in ordinary events. That’s why , there are so many programs and articles about natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies. Good news doesn’t usually make headlines. Bad news does. 
Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on peoples’ private lives, they follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them, which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is- should this be allowed? Do you remember hoe paparazzi pursued Diana, Princess of Wales, to the scene of her death in Paris on August 31, 1997? Who was guilty of this accident? It is quite possible that journalists were, isn’t it?
The main course of news for millions people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that’s an important advantage. Seeing as we know is believing. Besides, it’s much more difficult for politicians to be in front of the cameras than on the pages of a newspaper. There isn’t any person in our country that hasn’t seen Savik Shuster’s TV talk show «Freedom of speech» is there?
Still, many people prefer the radio. It’s good to listen to in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.
Newspapers don’t react to events as TV, but they usually provide us with extra details, comment and background information.
The Internet has become another important source of information. It’s main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don’t have to wait for news on TV
