Great Britain
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated in the north-west coast of Europe between the Atlantic Ocean on the north and north-west and the north-west and the North Sea on the east.

London is situated on the both banks of the River Thames. Today in its full extent Greater London covers 625 square miles. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End They are rather different from one another. The City is the heart of London. Numerous banks, offices and firms are situated there. It is the financial centre of the UK, with many banks, offices and the Stock Exchange. But the City is also a market for goods from all parts of the world. The City extends over an area of about 2,6 square kilometers. Westminster is the historic centre of government. The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. The best hotels, shops, restaurants and theatres are situated there. There are beautiful houses and gardens belonging to the wealthy people. Oxford Street in the West End is the endless shopping area which attracts visitors from all over the world.
The East End is the poorest part of London. There are a lot of factories and docks here. The port of London is also in the East End. The streets in the East End are narrow, the buildings are not attractive. The East End is populated by working class families.

Advertising plays a great role in our life, doesn’t it?
P. You are quite right. In fact, it is the greatest art form of the 20 century like music, film, painting and etc.
T. But why do we need them?
P. Adverts inform about different products, clothes, gadgets, social events and so on.
P. In my opinion, ads convince people to buy things, to make better choices.
T. Thus, we must admit that they do perform a useful service to society.
Where can we see advertisements? (Slide1)
There are different sorts of adverts. (Slide 2). Look at the table and match the words with their definitions. (1c,2e,3d,4a,5b) Which adverts are the most effective?
P. I think, television is the most effective advertising medium. Commercials are colourful, realistic, convincing. I like humour in adverts.
2. Describing advertisements
T. Have a look at adverts in your students’ books at page 64. How do you find them?
Benetton is a designer clothes shop: the model in the car advert is Claudia Shiffer: the Micra is a Nissan car model: the boots advert is an advert for Italian leather boots.
