One of the most difficult problems facing non-native speakers of English is pronunciation. It is usually the
largest obstacle to overcome when trying to achieve fluency. Many people underestimate the importance of
pronunciation in English language learning.They tend to regard the pronunciation as less important than
grammar and vocabulary. Mastering grammar, having a good knowledge of vocabulary, being able to read and
write well, is a part of learning a language. However not being able to pronounce words hugely hinders
communication, especially since it is believed that, learners who are unable to pronounce words are also unable
to understand them. This means that teaching pronunciation is an important area, which should be stopped
being neglected. There are some sounds in English that probably don’t exist in our own language – for instance,
English has 5 written vowels, while academician I.Kenesbaev who specially investigated the phonetic system
of Kazakh language, says that the Kazakh vocalic system consists of 9 pure vowels and [у], [й] diphthongs [1,
158]. So, even in Kazakh language sound combinations are one of the complex phonetic phenomenon [2, 85].
Morley rightly says, “Intelligible pronunciation is an essential component of communication competence”
[3, 488]. Thus learning to pronounce the sounds of English in natural speech is a crucial part in English
pronunciation learning. It is widely recognized that acquiring good pronunciation is very important because
bad pronunciation habits are not easily corrected. Kelly states that a learner who consistently mispronounces
a range of phonemes can be extremely difficult for a speaker from another language community to
understand. This can be very frustrating for the learner who may have a good command of grammar and

lexis but have difficulty in understanding and being understood by a native speaker [4, 120].
Main body.
The sound system of English is made up of phonemes, or individual sounds which carry the
potential to make meaning, and these may be vowels, diphthongs (combinations of two vowel sounds),
triphthongs (combinations of three vowelsounds) or consonants. These sounds are made using our tongue in
different parts of the mouth.
Every syllable of every word in English has a vowel or vowel sound. Unfortunately, it doesn’t play fair
when comes to vowels. A vowel does not always have the same sound. Each vowel has both a long and a
short sound. When vowels are next to each other on words, new sounds may occur. In words, surrounding
consonants, such as l and r, may change vowel sounds.
There are six vowel letters in English: A, E, I, O, U, Y. The letter Y represents the vowel sounds [i], [ai]
(mystery, type) and the consonant (semivowel) sound [y] (yes). Together, vowel letters represent from 15 to
22 vowel sounds.
In order to reveal the frequency of usage the words with combinations of vowels and show the diversity
of vowel letters in reading and writing, we have analyzed two-letter vowel combinations in the novel by John
Galsworthy "The Forsyte Saga" [5]. Many of these words are repeated in the same page several times.
