having lost the human values and in all his works he highlights problems of human beings in self-belonging
to him order. The investigator’s work called “M.Coetzee and the Idea of the Public Intellectual” is
considered to be the biggest work, devoted to the creative activity of Coetzee. Just in this work, he
appreciates Coetzee as a writer of South African intellectual novelist, as a skillful writer being able to say his
words against apartheid and post-apartheid regimes, as a writer describing confrontations taking place among
the people [4:127].
Undoubtedly, J.M. Coetzee has included himself into the novel “Elizabeth Costello” by this character,
and has “smelted” himself in the novel. All through the novel Elizabeth Costello as the writer himself gives
lectures, speaks of her considerations on life, death and moral values. Australian writer Elizabeth Costello
lectures now to scientists and students, to appearing tourists and now even to herself. The lectures being
linked with animals, religion and conviction, with the nature of evil, the place of mankind in the world, the
power of wisdom and faithfulness, with defense of the talent of a writer, can be valued as the consequences
of lectures and interviews, given by J.M. Coetzee in different years. We may say that the work has no plot
and the text is connected with a number of essays. One of the facts, causing our interest is that after each
given lecture the writer’s idea is distorted on the view of the hero upon life, her approach to the problems are
subjected to mockery, the arisen questions, cause arguments among the readers. Coetzee for all given theses,
introduces antitheses and leaves the answers to the problems for the readers to answer.
J.M. Cotzee with the exactness of a goldsmith, describes the problems of modern eclectic man and tries to
show the fact that they can’t agree with men and society. Such a person approximately does not possess
exact looks upon life, and as there is no assurance for the problems which he raises, influences on the
surroundings as well and are met with misunderstanding. Very often, or such people for an instant “trust” in
something, fitting to their own spirits, very easily they loose their trust. The problems arisen in the work has
no unanimous solution, is the manifestation of ambivalence of modern man.
In the life story of an invented writer, Coetzee describes a man’s place, position and the thirst for
understanding the life in the society. From the first view of the work, love for mother and sister, the life
history of the women characters vivified in the works, turns to a complex notion as thinking on the existence
of painful instances reflected all through his novels J.M.Coetzee as a man tries to find an answer seeming
easier at the first look, to answer the question “what is the man necessary for life” but it is an extremely
difficult question and having no unanimous answer.
The novel consisting of eclectic essay lectures is divided into 8 parts. Elizabeth Costello is a typical
Coetzee personage and is the character of an old woman, bearing the physical and methotysical tiredness.
She tours the world, takes part at the gatherings which are of use neither to her, nor to the others. She makes
a report at the literary awarding of a prize, lectures to entertain the wealthy people, takes part at the
workshops devoted against the evil forces, gets into polemics with the persons whom he does not understand
and with the people who he is not interested in at all.
Elizabeth Costello’s thoughts are set up on the works of great Kafka. The investigated Alexander
Vyalsev, analyzing the write’s works justifully noted that J.M. Cotzee’s novels are difficult to understand at
the first view: “In Cotzee’s novels there are always some plans, a covert meaning is existing, it is too
difficult to understand them from the first view… That’s why both the heroes and their conducts, both the
condition and even the ground of the novel do not seem to be real” [5]. Just this approach brings the writer
nearer to Kafka’s creative activity. Coetzee too, as Kafka, tries to raise human problems, sees the “man”
getting lost in the world, warms that a disease as loneliness, indifference which embraces the mankind shall
catch any person in the world.
The work which has started with the feeling of realism, being set up on the attitudes of a son and mother, is
the description of the looks of an old-aged woman in the world, people and society. Costello who gets into
polemics with the story of Kafka on Monkey, speaks of reality and concept, speaks of the sufferings of the man
being left between the truth and lie. The author tries to vivify the cause of this misunderstanding of a man
trying to free himself from the pressing him the vice.
