Astronomy

These early observations of the night sky laid down the foundation of the first physical science – astronomy.

Astronomers, such as Nicolaus Copernicus, discovered that Earth rotates around the Sun.

His discovery greatly affected the way scientists and philosophers thought about the world. It showed that similar to Earth human is not the center of Universe, but he, as the Earth, is only small part of the Universe.

Another contribution of astronomy is the first usage of scientific measuring instrument.

Galileo Galilei used first telescope to surface of the Moon and satellites of Jupiter.

By thinking about motion of the Moon Isaac Newton discovered gravity. By observing distant galaxies astronomers in XX century determined age of our Universe is 13.8 billion years. So Universe was born 13.8 billion years ago and it will certainly die at some point in the future.

Analyzing all the facts mentioned above we can understand the importance of astronomy in determining the place of humankind in space and time.
