12.1. Space Shuttle taking of

During take-off, the sudden large upward acceleration of the rocket causes the blood to flow away from the head due to inertia. If the cosmonauts are strapped in the vertical position, the sudden flow of blood away from the head will deprive their brain of oxygen. The lack of oxygen will cause momentary unconsciousness. Strapped cosmonauts in the horizontal position will minimize this of blood from the brain.
