THE LABOUR MIGRATION INFLUENCE ON KAZAKHSTAN-
CHINESE RELATIONS
Abstract.
The article considers the process of Chinese migration, namely
labor migration to Kazakhstan. The relevance of the article lies in the fact that
Chinese migration has become one of the most important factors influencing the
socio-economic development of Kazakhstan. Although the official attitude towards
migration flows from China is positive, the level of fears based on threats to
the country caused by the expansion of Chinese migration does not decrease in
Kazakhstani society. The contradictory assessments of the demographic, economic,
and socio-political consequences of the expansion of the Chinese presence in the

country are constantly in the field of view of researchers and periodically become
the subject of heated socio-political discussions.
The article summarizes the results of surveys and social research conducted
in Kazakhstan in different years. Based on these results, the piece analyzes the
preconditions, flow, geography, and composition of labor migration; and predicts the
possible consequences in the future. During the analysis, the neoclassical economic
theory of M. Todaro, the new economic theory of migration by O. Stark, E. Taylor,
the theory of dual labor markets by M. Pior, and the theory of migration networks
by A. Palloni were considered.
The analysis shows that widespread claims about Chinese demographic
expansion in Kazakhstan are unfounded. However, it was noted that the uncontrolled
expansion of China's economic presence, especially in strategically important
sectors of Kazakhstan's economy, could lead to a rapid and large-scale increase in
the flow of legitimate foreign migration from China.
