“His Nobel Lecture, “He and His
Man,” offered not a series of thoughts and insights about what it means to write or to be a writer or reader
or human being, as Nobel lectures tend to do, but rather an allusive short story about Robinson Crusoe that
more than one news writer labeled “oblique”
[18]. The writer justfully stresses the fact that a writer too is a
person able to think, and notes that his/her expressing his/her attitude to the events, occurring around him/her
is a direct duty of the writer.
Undoubtedly the speech which he made when he was introduced the Nobel Prize is linked with this idea:
“As he, Robinson, was made to see when of a sudden, on his island, he came one day upon the footprint of a
man in the sand. It was a print, and therefore a sign: of a foot, of a man. But it was a sign of much else too.
You are not alone, said the sign; and also, No matter how far you sail, no matter where you hide, you will be
searched out”
. In this Nobel Prize Speech which he devoted to Robinson Crusoe, Coetzee describes the
torture of human loneliness and tries to make the listeners understand, the value of the feeling of trust of
Robinson Crusoe, who after long years of loneliness sees footprints of human being. Coetzee trusts in men
and the future of mankind and whatever may happen, he believes that human beings shall never loose their
hopes and firm beliefs for the future.
Coetzee trusts the power of man’s spirits and expresses this trust in this way: “there may come a time
when such extreme souls as I write of may be able to bear their afflictions, but that time is not now. It will be
a time, if ever it comes, when giants or perhaps angels stride the earth” [6].
