THE PROBLEM OF MAN AND SOCIETY IN THE NOVEL “ELIZABETH COSTELLO” BY J.M. COETZEE    Abstract  The most outstanding representative of XX century South African Literature in the English Language, a critic,  scholar Nobel Prize winner on Literature (2003) John Maxwell Coetzee is the first writer, having won the Booker prize  twice (1983, 1999). The writer’s accusation in his novels has been too severe against those, who degraded the manhood and personality,  against those who supported racial and religious discriminations. John Maxwell’s Novel “Elizabeth Costello which  came under his pen in 2003 is a novel version of lectures, and considerations of which he lectured at different higher  educational institutions of the world. The investigators studying the literary activity of Coetzee consider the character of  Elizabeth Costello as alter-egos, and as heralded of his thoughts. The novel “Elizabeth Costello” is a search for  answering the questions on the man and society, the man and his place in the world and a man’s mission in the world. John Maxwell in the name of Elizabeth Costello tries to find answers to the questions on the existential state of  modern man, describes the last days of a person who keeps away from manhood and society, and arises numerous  questions before society. In the period of life in which good and bad, good and evil, value and unvalued have changed  their places John Maxwell shows the troubles of total indifference, having embraced the whole society. Elizabeth  Costello-Coetzee in the period of life, in which the human values are lost, the abyss among the peoples has deepened  tries to understand the complications created by spiritual-moral crisis. The main idea of the book is to describe the  troubles, numerated above, at the same time is a human search, able to prevent calamities, awaiting the society Coetzee  describes the crisis, into which a person has fallen, but he never loses the confidence in the man. Coetzee trusts in the  able man, and hopes for the victory of good on the bad.  жүктеу 6,12 Mb.
