TEACHING IN THREE LANGUAGES
Kazakh from grade 1. Russian is introduced as L2 from second quarter
of grade 2. English is taught from grade 3
• BIL implement the program of late immersion into Kazakh lan-
guage from grade 9: groups with Russian language of instruction learn
46% of their curriculum in Kazakh, other subjects are taught in English,
Russian is taught as a language subject
• NIS implement extensive 4-year preparation of their learners for in-
struction in English, whereas BIL start teaching in English after
4 months of intensive language preparation
• The amount of academic load of language subjects at NIS and BIL
is twice as much as in the mainstream schools. Weekly load of L2 and
L3 at NIS and BIL is 4-5 hours, whereas the load in the mainstream
schools is 2-3 hours
• Expected level of L2 proficiency in NIS is C1, BIL – B2-C1, main-
stream schools – B2
• Expected level of L3 proficiency in NIS is C1, BIL – B2, mainstream
schools – B1
• Language environment is supported through extracurricular activi-
ties in several languages (images 4, 5)
