Give students a time lim- it of 15 seconds. Students must try to describe the word or phrase  without using any of these words. E.g. for pounding, they might  say “what your heart starts doing when you are nervous”. When  students have finished, ask them to change positions and write  three new words or phrases on the board.    Pre-reading (I, W) T tells the students that they are going to read a magazine article  about “fight or flight” situations. Tell ss to read the article quickly to check how many “fight and  flight” situations are mentioned in the text. While reading, stu- dents need to underline new words for them and try to deduce  their meaning. Answers: The situations mentioned are: a man getting his arm  stuck in some machinery; babes spitting out bitter-tasting food;  parents lifting cars off trapped children; people surviving in the  jungle after a plane crash; annoying people picking on you.    While-reading (FA)  Teacher explains the formative assessment task clearly. Students  read “I cut off my arm to survive” text. Ask the students to read  the instructions attentively. After reading the text, learners need to identify which two of the given points the article doesn’t raise. In  the second task they choose from the sentences A-H the one which  fits each gap 1-7 as seven sentences have been removed from the  article. There is one extra sentence they do not need to use.
