Hashimoto’s disease — an autoimmune ill- ness in which there is inflammation, and then destruction and fibrosis of the thyroid gland, ultimately resulting in hypothyroid- ism. Autoantibodies against thyroglobulin and receptors for thyroid stimulating hor- mone cause the progressive destruction. Hashimoto’s is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in areas of the world where there are inadequate levels of io- dine. It affects people of all ages, but is most common in older women and those with a family history of autoimmune dis- eases. Thyroid hormone replacement is required
