with the consideration that he shall spend the rest of his life after his death in Araf.
The hotel in which Elizabeth lives at the same time reminds of the house for old-aged people. The old
writer who lives with the feelings of lost hopes in life, has sacrificed all his life for humanistic ideas and even
in the end he evinces persistence in not giving up these ideas. Elizabeth Costello, who openly said in her no-
vels that principles of humanism shall save the mankind, at the “Supreme court” before death she is deman-
ded to be more truthful. The writer, who is standing at the Gate, though wishes to know what is taking place
behind that gate, the janitor in answer demands the report “What I trust in?” The old-aged woman having
seen all the “faces” of life cannot find exact answers to the questions, put to her. The question “what she
really believes in”, “what is life” makes her confused, is left helpless between the truth and lie, and speaks
about frogs in which she believed when she was a child. Elizabeth Costello’s truthfulness still hardens the
situation into which she has fallen and her answer “I describe the trust of other peoples”, determines her end.
As to Coetzee, a writer is “the secretary of invisible”, a person conveying the words of a supreme power,
and from this view point it not correct to search for meaning in his works. The writer as if with ancient
grease makes “eydos” of transcendental world:
“But I am or was a writer because of who I am or was. I
have not ceased to be what I am. As yet. Or so it feels to me. I am a writer, and what I write is what I hear. I
am a secretary of the invisible, one of many secretaries over the ages. That is my calling: dictation secretary.
It is not for me to interrogate, to judge what is given me. I merely write down the words and then test them,
test their soundness, to make sure I have heard right”
[6].
As to Coetzee a person can describe a human imitation by any of his conviction. His hero, while
describing human torments sees the man as an existential being and tries to vivify all the bad and good
“face” of the man.
Аs you know, great skill from the writer is required in order to “ maximize the artistic truth to the realities
of everyday human life” [17, 100].
Elizabeth Costello understands that as it is with the interior of the work of Kafka Araf is for a writer “an
instrument”, it is the torture of unnecessary “literary humanism”. Faith and faithfulness, conviction and loss
of conviction, the responsibility of an artist before his readers and before himself/herself, a person’s own life,
and the responsibility of the people of the whole world turn to the indivisible problems, for a writer not easy
to deal with. Coetzee by the thoughts of Elizabeth Costello, who is the alter-egos of the writer, tries to vivify
existential choice of the modern man, describes the last days of a lonely person who has been separated from
the people and society and raises numerous questions before the mankind.
Matthew Cheney, who expresses his attitude about the writer notes:
