By the order of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan in May 23, 1996 No. 143 Kokshetau teacher training college named after Sh. Ch. Valikhanov, agricultural institute named after S. Sadvakasov and branch of the Karaganda polytechnical institute were reorganized into Kokshetau university named after Sh. Ualikhanov.

The university carries out educational activity according to the State license No. 12019134, in 2014 successfully passed the state certification, by the decision of Accreditation council of Independent Agency of accreditation and a rating (NAAR) by results of national institutional accreditation is accredited for a period of five years (the certificate No. AA0016 of February 21, 2014) and 16 educational programs are accredited for a period of five years, "the Russian Register" with obtaining the certificate of quality and the international certified network — IQNet is certified on compliance to requirements of the ISO 9001:2008 International standard by Association on certification., it is noted by the International award of "European Quality" ("The European quality").

In September, 2010 the HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION signed the Great Charter of Universities which is a basis of theBologna Declaration
